Similar to Facebook, Twitter and lately, LinkedIn, Instagram has been on the rise when it comes to social media marketing. Millions of images are posted and shared every day, but many digital marketers still don’t seem to understand the importance attracting targeted Instagram followers. Either that or they don’t fully grasp how to go about doing it. If you’re new to Instagram, there are a few actions you can take right away that will help you create a “follow worthy” Instagram presence, starting off by setting up and optimizing your profile.
Optimize Your Profiles, Starting with Your Username
You’ll need to optimize your profile, including your username, making sure that it is searchable and recognizable by, if possible, using your business’ name. If you find that your brand’s name is taken, come up with a username that at least starts with it, still making it possible for anyone looking for your business to find you.
Choosing Your Profile Photo
Use the same profile photo (like your logo), sized to fit, that you use to showcase your brand on all of your other social media platforms.
Filling Out Your Bio
First and foremost – personalize your Instagram profile, making it stand out. By standing out we mean sharing information about yourself and your brand that your targeted Instagram followers will appreciate, giving them a persuasive reason to follow you. Make your bio enjoyable, informative and actionable. Also, be sure to add a link from your bio to your flagship website or the relevant landing page, making it easy for visitors to find out more about you and what you have to offer.
Once you’ve completed your profile, make sure that your Instagram account is set to “Public” which is the default setting. You can check this out by going to your profile page via your Instagram app and tapping on “edit profile”.
Refine Your Photography and Photo Editing Skills
Because Instagram is a mobile app, most of the photos you post to the social site are going to be taken using a mobile device. Although some brands choose to use professional photography for their Instagram photos, the majority use smartphones, which is the best way, given that that’s what the whole “human friendly” feel of Instagram is meant for. You’ll find that Instagram provides a few basic editing features, but you’ll get better results if you take photo editing a step further by learning a few other photo editing apps to enhance them.
Now let’s move on to creating Instagram content that speaks to your targeted Instagram followers.
Write Attention Getting, “Share Worthy” Captions
While videos and photos are crucial factors when it comes to Instagram posts, captions don’t always get the attention they deserve. Captions are actually an essential part of an Instagram post and you can bet that industry giants on Instagram give them careful consideration. Make it a point to consistently post compelling captions, humanizing your brand, winning over targeted Instagram followers, also making the content more “share-worthy” which gives your brand more exposure.
Taking Advantage of Hashtags
If you take the time to come up with relevant hashtags, your posts are certain to get more exposure. If coming up with great, hashtags is a challenge for you, take the time to study relevant hashtags in your industry or niche. An effective way to do this research is within the Instagram app itself, by clicking on the magnifying glass icon (aka the explore tab).
Attracting and growing targeted Instagram followers takes time and effort and it won’t happen overnight. The important thing to keep in mind is that the stronger foundation you develop for your account in your niche community, the higher quality your targeted Instagram followers will be.
